Moving Beyond Utility: Why Customer Success Matters More Than Uptime

Darren Elliston, Director of Customer Success and Service Delivery at Lunar Digital.

The data centre industry does infrastructure brilliantly - it’s what we’re there for, after all. But over time, “keeping the lights on” has become the bare minimum, not the benchmark. In a world where customers expect speed, flexibility, and support that grows with them, simply being there isn’t enough.

At Lunar Digital, we believe it’s time to raise the bar. That’s what The Lunar Way is all about - putting customers at the centre of how we operate, and designing service that adds ongoing and tangible value to their business.

We started by asking ourselves some tough questions. What does success look like for our customers? Is it just uptime and utilisation? Or is it knowing their infrastructure partner understands their challenges and helps them make smarter, faster decisions? For us, it’s the latter - and it’s the reason we’ve evolved our approach.

The Lunar Way isn’t just a framework or a buzzword. It’s a set of guiding principles that shape both our delivery model and our customer relationships. We’ve taken what is traditionally reactive and made it proactive. Rather than waiting for issues to emerge, we monitor and anticipate. We work closely with customers to understand their long-term goals, then build roadmaps that support them every step of the way.

Our service delivery is supported by solid operational data, of course, but we don’t stop at analytics. We turn that data into clarity. Into decisions. Into confidence that what we’re delivering is aligned with what our customers actually need, not just what the contract outlines.

Here are the pillars we’ve built The Lunar Way around:

  • Proactive Partnership: We embed ourselves within our customers' infrastructure journey, addressing challenges before they impact operations.
  • Insight-Driven Delivery: Our data isn't just there for reporting - it's there to guide meaningful, strategic service interactions.
  • Aligned Growth: Whether our customers are scaling rapidly or changing direction, our delivery evolves as they do.

What makes this important isn’t just about how it frames our internal operations, it’s what it signals to the broader industry. Colocation has long been seen as a utility: reliable, technical, predictable. But in the age of digital transformation, that view is quickly becoming outdated. Customers want more than service, they want strategy. They want infrastructure partners who aren’t just present, but invested in their journey.

When providers position themselves purely as technical hosts, they miss a huge opportunity to help shape outcomes. To be part of the reason a customer succeeds, not just part of their cost base. And in a really competitive market, that really matters.

By championing The Lunar Way, we’re making customer success more than a department, it’s a philosophy that guides how we show-up every day. It’s how we make sure every element of our service, from onboarding to expansion, contributes to genuine value. And it’s helping us foster the kind of relationships that go beyond contracts.

For the industry, this is a chance to grow. To evolve beyond metrics like uptime and utilisation, and instead lead with clarity, partnership, and relevance. The providers that embrace this shift won’t just retain customers, they’ll help redefine what excellence in infrastructure looks like.

At Lunar Digital, we're proud to be part of that change. Because when customer success is foundational, everyone benefits.
